Michelle Obama shares new stories, anecdotes in her memoir, 'Becoming' - Business Insider
The woman I decided to blog about for this post is a woman who has been inspiring me since I was in middle school. This woman provided that anyone can make it out of their neighborhood when you put your mind to it and go for what you want. The woman of the topic is Mrs. Michelle Obama. Michelle Obama has always inspired me because of the way she carried herself and the way she supported her husband during his presidential terms. As a first lady, she made a name for herself and did not fall into her husband's shadow. After watching her movie on Netflix called "Becoming" it made me read her book and understand her and her passion more. Recently, Michelle Obama has been visiting schools to listen to young girl's stories and provide advice for them. According to White House (2020),
"In 2015, Mrs. Obama joined President Obama to launch Let Girls Learn, a U.S. government-wide initiative to help girls around the world go to school and stay in school. As part of this effort, Mrs. Obama called on countries across the globe to help educate and empower young women, and she shared the stories and struggles of these young women with young people here at home to inspire them to commit to their own education." (para 10).
When I saw that she was doing that recently I thought it was an amazing thing because it's a once in a lifetime chance and it's giving girls an opportunity to meet someone who was in the same shoes they're in and how to build themselves. As I mentioned before, reading Michelle Obama's book was an eye-opener and showed passion.
Michelle was born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Illinois in a two-parent household. She also has a brother named Craig, who is older than her. She went on to Princeton University to major in sociology and African American studies in 1988 and graduated from Havard Law School in 1988. After moving back home, she met Barack Obama at a law firm.
White House (2020) mentions "After a few years, Mrs. Obama decided her true calling was working with people to serve their communities and their neighbors. She served as assistant commissioner of planning and development in Chicago’s City Hall before becoming the founding executive director of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, an AmeriCorps program that prepares youth for public service." (para 5).
After finding her passion in serving people and their communities, she launched a program called "Let's Move" in 2010, which promoted reducing childhood obesity rates in communities (White House, 2020). Her program promoted healthier eating and being active for kids and also teaching their parents how their kids can be active and how to incorporate themselves with their kid's active lifestyle.
In 2014, Michelle created the "Reach Higher Initiative" program to promote an inspire younger people to continue education past high school no matter what the education program is (White House, 2020).
Because of the community work and the passion that Michelle Obama has for the community is one of the reasons why I want to give back to my community. it's important to have representation in your community to inspire your community to thrive.

  1. Hello Kennedi ,
I loved reading your blog about Mrs. Obama . As a black woman I believe she has endured a lot of hardship while her husband was in office. So many times this woman had be called out her name and said looked like a man , but yet she has always kept her head up and never got discouraged. She is the true definition of black girl magic .
